Apple unveils second-gen HomePod with S7 chip and new midnight colour option

The Apple HomePod (2nd-gen).

Apple just announced the HomePod (2nd generation).

Compared to the original mode, the new HomePod has five tweeters (down from 7) and four microphones (down from 6). The new HomePod is also powered by a S7 chip (versus A8 on the original model) for computational audio, and a U1 chip for ultra-wideband features such as transferring music from the iPhone to the device.

The HomePod (2nd generation) is also positioned as "a smart home essential". It can listen for smoke and carbon monoxide alarms with Sound Recognition, and send notifications directly to the iPhone. It also has built-in temperature and humidity sensor for indoor environments. The new HomePod connects to and controls Matter-enabled accessories, and functions as an essential home hub.

The Apple HomePod (2nd generation) is available to purchase in Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, the U.K, the U.S and 11 other countries and regions for US$299 (~S$395).

Interestingly, Singapore is not one of the countries that will be getting the HomePod. The first-generation HomePod was never available here and the second-generation one won't be available here at launch either. Whether it will eventually be coming here remains to be seen.

The new HomePod comes in white and midnight, a new colour made with 100% recycled mesh fabric, with a colour-matched woven power cable.

It is compatible with iPhone SE (2nd generation) and later, or iPhone 8 and later running iOS 16.3 or later), or iPad Pro, iPad (5th generation) and later, iPad Air (3rd generation) and later, or iPad mini (5th generation) and later running iPadOS 16.3.
