Apple said to have replaced 10 times as many batteries as expected last year

Apple's battery replacement program was available worldwide throughout 2018 and offered users of older iPhone models to change their batteries at a discounted price.

The iPhone battery replacement program is cited by Apple CEO Tim Cook as one of the several reasons for the weaker-than-expected revenue. How big an impact did it had on the company's revenue?

Well, John Gruber from Daring Fireball claimed that Apple replaced as many as 11 million iPhone batteries in 2018. This is almost 11 times higher than the usual rate of one to two million replacements annually. Gruber went on to explain that the effects of the iPhone battery replacement program were apparent after the launch of the iPhone XR and XS models.

If there are 11 million iPhone customers who had the batteries replaced and were satisfied with the performance of their devices, Apple has lost a massive group of potential customers who would have otherwise upgraded to a new model.
