Apple said to have agreed to TSMC chip price hike

Apple reportedly agreed to a chip price hike from its main supplier TSMC.

Economic Daily News reports that the price hike will take effect in 2023. The price of 8-inch chip wafers will go up by 6% while 12-inch wafers will increase by 3 to 5%.

The increase in chip costs is not unexpected; the ongoing global shortage in components led many analysts to predict a hike in production costs for chipmakers. Nikkei Asia reported in September 2021 that TSMC is preparing its biggest price hike in a decade.

Earlier this year, Bloomberg claimed Samsung is discussing with its customers about raising chipmaking prices as much as 20% this year. A key TSMC supplier also warned in July that more price hikes are coming for chip components.

Will Apple be able to absorb the chip price hike and maintan the prices of its products in 2023? Only time will tell.
