Apple said to be working with South Korean firm on car chip module and package
Apple's electric vehicle (EV) project seems to have hit a new milestone.
TheElec says Apple has been developing chip modules and packages for its electric vehicle (EV) with a South Korean outsourced semiconductor and test (OSAT) company. The work is believed to have started last year and is slated to complete in 2023.
The chip modules and packages are for the final chip that will operate the autopilot function of the EV. They typically consist of a neural processing unit (NPU), CPU, GPU, memory and camera interface.
Bloomberg reported in November last year that Apple has completed work on a new processor to power the EV. The end-game for Apple is to design a fully autonomous car with no steering wheel or pedals, and an interior that has lounge-style seating. The EV is said to be planned for a launch as early as 2025.
