Following an earlier report this month by The Wall Street Journal that Apple is likely to drop Qualcomm from the iPhone lineup next year, Fast Company claims that Apple has already started discussions with Intel on 5G modems.

A source told Fast Company that Apple's engineers "have been engaged with Intel counterparts for early work on 5G" while talks with Qualcomm has been "limited". While Qualcomm is the leader in modem chips for phones, Apple's engineers are confident that Intel's 5G modem will meet their needs for a future iPhone.

Intel announced its first commercial 5G NR XMM 8060 modem yesterday, which has been successfully tested to enable 5G calls over the 28GHz frequency and will be made available by mid-2019.

Apple aims to build the Intel modem onto an integrated system-on-chip (SoC) which contains the CPU, GPU and other iPhone components. Intel and Apple will co-design the SoC and it will be manufactured at an Intel facility.
