Apple said to be working on AirPods Lite and Apple Watch Ultra with microLED

The Apple Watch Ultra uses an OLED display.

Apple could be unveiling a more affordable AirPods model and an Apple Watch Ultra with a bigger microLED display in 2024.

Haitong International Securities analyst Jeff Pu claims Apple has been working on the AirPods Lite. Positioned as a "lower-priced product", the AirPods Lite will allow Apple to compete with the more affordable offerings from rival brands.

Pu added the demand for AirPods is likely to drop this year due to "soft AirPods 3 demand". He also says Apple might not be releasing any new AirPods in 2023. The current AirPods lineup consists of the AirPods (2nd-gen), AirPods (3rd-gen), AirPods Pro (2nd-gen) and the AirPods Max.

As for the Apple Watch lineup, Pu predicts no major spec upgrade is planned for the different models. However, the 2024 Apple Watch Ultra is expected to adopt a bigger 2.1-inch microLED display. The current Apple Watch Ultra comes with a 1.93-inch OLED display.

Considering that the Apple Watch is the first Apple device to sport an OLED display, it will not be a surprise that the Apple Watch Ultra will also be the first to adopt microLED technology. Apple acquired LuxVue, a company specialising in next-generation microLED technology in 2014.

Bloomberg reported in March 2018 that Apple is designing and producing its own microLED displays at a secret facility in California. The company is also rumoured to be working with PlayNitride in the microLED market.

Foxconn reportedly invested in microLED technology since 2019 to put itself in a good position to secure orders  from Apple when the time comes. Focus Taiwan claimed in 2020 that Apple is investing in a new plant to make miniLED and microLED displays.
