Apple said to be in talks with Chinese EV battery makers
Apple's electric vehicle (EV) project seems to be on track as it is said to be in early-stage talks with Chinese EV battery makers.
Four sources told Reuters that Apple is discussing with CATL and BYD on battery supplies for its EV car. As part of a potential deal, Apple wants CATL and BYD to build manufacturing facilities in the U.S. However, CATL is hesitant to do so due to the ongoing trade tensions between the two countries.
Reuters reported in December 2020 that Apple is in the advanced stages of its car plans and production could start as soon as 2024. One of the key features is the use of a new battery design that increases range and reduces cost significantly.
Analyst Ming-Chi kuo claimed that the Apple Car should arrive in 2025 at the earliest as the specifics of the car have not been finalised. The first-gen Apple Car is reportedly autonomous and designed to operate without a driver.
Magna and Foxconn are cited as the likely contenders for manufacturing the Apple Car due to their long-term relationships with Apple. There are also other rumours that Apple is exploring a self-driving platform or taxi service. The Apple Car team recently lost a few top executives and it could be a setback to the development of the EV.
