Apple said to accelerate adoption of Mini-LED displays in iPads and MacBooks
Apple is reportedly accelerating its Mini-LED adoption for the iPad and Macbook lineups.
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo wrote in his latest investor note that about 30 - 40% of iPads and 20 - 30% of MacBooks will use Mini-LED displays. His estimate is based on a report that Apple has found a second supplier of Mini-LED chips for 2021. Sanan Optoelectronics will join Epistar in suppling Mini-LED chips.
With two suppliers, Apple is likely able to negotiate better prices. The cost of Mini-LED chips is expected to drop from $75 - $85 per unit to "less than $45", hence Apple is now able to bring Mini-LED displays to more devices.
Earlier in July, Apple reportedly recruited two more suppliers to make PCBs for the Mini-LED devices. Small volume shipments of Mini-LED backlit modules are expected to be shipped in Q4 to support the launch of a new 12.9-inch iPad Pro. Apple also invested in a new plant to make Mini-LED and Micro-LED displays.
