Apple’s video streaming service could launch in early Q2

Apple is preparing to launch its video streaming service in early Q2.

Sources told The Information that Apple has informed its content partners to have their respective content ready by mid-April. In addition, Apple is said to be targeting a launch “within several weeks” of the mid-April deadline.

The video streaming service is also believed to be launched alongside the upgraded TV app which will allow customers to subscribe to other video streaming services. The Information’s report corroborates Bloomberg’s claims that the new Apple TV app will be the central location for customers to find, watch and buy content.

Apple has been working on the video streaming service and original content for several years. Apple reportedly started talks with Hollywood executives in 2015 to suss out their interest and explore areas of collaboration. It also approached veteran producers about buying rights to scripted TV shows.

The iPhone maker made a number of notable hires; former Amazon Fire TV chief Timonthy D. Twerdahl joined Apple in February 2017 as a vice president for product marketing. Former YouTube and Spotify executive Shiva Rajaraman joined Apple in March 2017. In June 2017, Apple announced via a press release that two top Sony TV executives, Jamie Ehrlicht and Zack Van Amburg, have joined the company to manage all aspects of video programming.

Apple is rumored to have prepared a budget of $1 billion to "procure and produce" content last year. In addition, the company had plans to launch up to 10 new shows. In June 2018, Apple and Oprah Winfrey signed a multi-year partnership to create original content.

Other than the upcoming video streaming service, it is reported that Apple is planning to launch a premium news subscription service by the first half of this year. Apple also started discussions with game developers last year to launch a subscription service for games.
