Apple rumoured to use Lightning-like authenticator chip on iPhone 15's USB-C port

Apple might develop its own version of USB-C for the iPhone 15.

Apple might use its own version of USB-C for the iPhone 15.

A tipster shared on Weibo claiming Apple has developed a custom integrated circuit (IC) for the USB-C port and charging cable for the iPhone 15. This could pave the way for new MFi-certified accessories, and Apple enjoying a cut of the commissions. Apple currently uses the standard USB-C interface without an IC chip on the iPad (10th-gen), iPad mini, iPad Air and iPad Pro.

It is unclear at the moment whether Apple could limit features such as faster charging and higher-speed data transfer to its own and MFi-certified cables. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo wrote in November 2022 that the Apple iPhone 15 Pro will support higher-speed transfers with USB-C.
