Apple rumored to ship new 18W USB-C power adapter for the iPhone this year

Apple may finally upgrade the power adapter which ships with the iPhone later this year.

According to an unverified source on Chinese social networking site Weibo, supply chain sources claim that Apple plans to upgrade to USB-C support for all its devices starting with this year's iPhone lineup. The upcoming iPhone models are said to ship with a redesigned 18W power adapter and an USB-C to Lightning cable.

Current iPhone models are bundled with a 5W power adapter and an USB-A to Lightning cable, but charging with this default setup is painfully slow. With the 18W USB-C power adapter, iPhone users can expect to charge their devices from 0% to 50% in about 30 minutes, and achieve 80% charge in an hour!

If this rumor turns out to be true, it will benefit iPhone users greatly as they do not need to purchase additional accessories to enjoy fast charging on their devices. It is also a long overdue upgrade for the iPhone since some Android handset makers have already bundled fast chargers for their flagship devices in the past few years.
