Apple rumored to launch a subscription service for games

Apple could be planning to launch a subscription service for games.

According to cheddar, five sources familiar with the matter claim that Apple started discussions with game developers in the second half of 2018. The subscription service for games would be like Netflix for games, where users pay a monthly subscription fee to access a bundled list of apps.

While details of the subscription costs or the type of games offered remain unclear, two sources said that Apple could be responsible for the distribution, marketing and other related costs of the games. As the service is still in the early stages of development, cheddar cautions that Apple might decide to abandon the plan.

Expanding the service business to include one for games could create another massive revenue stream especially when iPhone sales are slowing. Apple is also said to be launching a video streaming service and a premium news subscription service later this year. It might bundle music, TV and magazine services as a single subscription package for consumers to sign up.
