Apple reportedly working on 2nd-gen AR/VR headset for launch in 2024
Apple is reportedly working on the second-generation augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) headset according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
Kuo says Apple's focus for the first and second generation of headsets will be a mixed reality experience where consumers can enjoy AR and VR content in one device. While the first-gen mixed reality headset is stated to weigh around 300 to 400g, Kuo says the second-gen mixed reality headset will be significantly lighter, sport a better industrial design, new battery system and a faster chipset.
As for sales numbers, Kuo estimates Apple will sell between 2.5 to 3.5 million units of the first-gen device in 2023, and close to 10 million units of the second-gen device in 2024.
Kuo's report comes days after Bloomberg claims that the first-gen mixed reality headset will focus on gaming, media consumption and communication. Kuo's earlier reports suggest that the first-gen device will launch in Q4 2022, support Wi-Fi 6E connectivity and track eye movement. The first-gen device is tipped to cost about US$3,000 and may need an iPhone connection to unlock its full functionality.
