Apple is reportedly starting work on 6G technology

Apple is reportedly starting work on 6G technology

Apple launched its first 5G iPhone lineup in 2020.

While 5G phones are getting mainstream, Apple is believed to be starting work on 6G technology.

Bloomberg reports that Apple posted job openings for wireless system research engineers to work on current and next-generation networks. The scope of work also involves participating in industry and academic forums on 6G technology.

As 6G is not expected to be ready until 2030, the job listings suggest that Apple wants to kick-start the in-house development and not rely on other companies. The iPhone maker currently uses 5G radio modems by Qualcomm for the iPhone 12 lineup.

Bloomberg claimed in a report last year that Apple had started development of its own radio modem. It is said to be "another key strategic transition" and a long-term strategic investment by Johny Srouji, the senior vice president of hardware technologies. An organisational shift where the modem chip engineering team was moved into the in-house hardware technology group hints that radio modem design is a higher priority for Apple.
