Apple reportedly moved iPad production to Vietnam for the first time
Apple is shifting some iPad production out of China to shield its supply chain from further disruptions.
Sources told Nikkei Asia that Apple is moving some iPad production from China to Vietnam for the first time. The numerous Covid-19 lockdowns in and around Shanghai had led to months of supply chain disruptions for Apple. BYD, one of Apple's main iPad assemblers, is said to have built production lines in Vietnam and they will soon produce small quantities of iPads.
In addition, Apple has asked suppliers to build up extra inventory for at least a few months so that there will be supply continuity in the event of a lockdown. The request is believed to apply across Apple's products including the iPhone, AirPods and MacBooks.
Nikkei Asia's report comes more than a week after the Wall Street Journal wrote that Apple is expanding production in India and Southeast Asia.
