Apple reportedly developing its own wireless chips

Apple is said to be assembling a new team to develop its own wireless chips.

Bloomberg reports that Apple is recruiting engineers for a new office in Southern California where Broadcom, Skyworks and other companies have offices. Recent job openings from Apple show that the company is interested to recruit people with experience in modem chips and wireless chips.

The new team is responsible for developing wireless radios, radio-frequency integrated circuits, a wireless chip, and semiconductors for connecting to Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. These components are currently supplied by Broadcom, Skyworks and Qualcomm.

The move to develop its own wireless chips comes after Apple started work on its own radio modem for the iPhone and transitioned away from Intel chips for the Mac lineup. The iPhone maker also developed its own power management and custom graphics chips.
