Apple reportedly cut iPhone 13 production due to chip shortage

Apple is expected to lower its production target for the iPhone 13 lineup.

People with knowledge of the matter told Bloomberg that Apple is likely to reduce the iPhone 13 orders by 10 million due to the global chip shortage. Its initial plan was to build as many as 90 million units for this year, but Broadcom and Texas Instruments (TI) are facing difficulties in supplying sufficient components. Sources claim one TI chip critical in powering the OLED display is in short supply.

Consumers are already facing longer delivery times for the iPhone 13 as Covid-19 continues to disrupt Apple's suppliers in Vietnam. In addition, regular power disruptions across China are putting the iPhone production at risk in the next quarter. Apple CEO Tim Cook and CFO Luca Maestri already expected supply constraints to affect the iPhone and iPad in Q4, but they remain confident that there will be "very strong double digit growth".
