Apple has reportedly acquired another AI startup.

People familiar with the deal told Bloomberg that the iPhone maker acquired Barcelona-based Vilynx Inc for about $50 million. 50 engineers and data scientists from Vilynx will remain at Apple, while the Barcelona office will be designated as one of the main AI research and development centers in Europe.

Vilynx's technology uses AI to analyse a video's visual, audio and text to understand the content and create tags. This in turn will make videos searchable. Vilynx's technology is also applied in other areas such as search and recommendation engines for multimedia content.

It is likely that Apple will use Vilynx's technology to boost Siri and the search feature across its products. For example, Apple can develop a recommendation engine for the TV and News apps to show more relevant content to users.

Apple acquired several AI companies over the past few years. In 2015, it bought AI firms Perceptio and VocalIQ. In 2017, it purchased AI-based face recognition firm RealFace for about $2 million. In 2018, Apple acquired Silk Labs, an AI startup which specialised in next-generation visual and audio intelligence to connected products" with "state-of-the-art image and audio recognition."

Earlier this year, it paid about $200 million for Seattle startup Xnor.AI which specialises in machine learning and image recognition tools that can be executed on low-power devices rather than relying on the cloud. In April, it bought Ireland-based Voysis to boost Siri so that it can better understand people's natural language. In May, Apple acquired machine learning startup Inductiv to improve Siri data.
