Big changes are coming to Apple's Podcasts app.

Firstly, it's getting a new design. Shows and episodes will get individual pages to make it easy for listeners to follow, listen, and share. Users will also get recommendations to check out new channels.

Users will see the new design when iOS 14.5 drops, which should be sometime next week.

But more importantly, Apple is also introducing Apple Podcasts Subscriptions. This will enable shows to offer premium subscriptions to their listeners for perks like ad-free listening, extra content, and early access to episodes.

This new feature will launch in 170 regions and countries beginning in May.

According to reports, creators will need to pay Apple US$19.99 to charge listeners subscriptions. And Apple will take a 30% cut for the first year and 15% for the next year and thereafter.

On the whole, it looks like a great way for Apple to get a piece of the burgeoning podcast market without needing to spend money to acquire exclusive shows like what rivals Spotify has done.
