Apple reclaims second spot in Q3 global phone shipments

The Apple iPhone 13 lineup.

Despite the global component shortage, Apple managed to have a strong sales momentum with the iPhone 13.

Market research firm Canalys estimates that Apple shipped 49.2 million iPhones in Q3, which is an increase of 14% over the same period a year ago. Apple relied on its retail stores and telco subsidies to drive sales of the iPhone 13.

Samsung retained the top position with 69.4 million units shipped, but shipments fell 13% compared to a year ago. The South Korean company struggled with the supply of its A-series phones, and its Galaxy Z foldable phones were unable to fill the gap left by the lack of a Galaxy Note device this year.

Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo rounded up the top five with the latter two brands shipping more units than a year before. Overall, the global phone shipments dropped 6% year-on-year. With the global component shortage expected to last till 2023, global phone shipments are likely to continue declining in the next few quarters.
