Apple is not only focusing on creating original video content, the company is also ramping up efforts in its smart car project.

A source has told The Information that Apple has hired Jamie Waydo, a senior engineer of Alphabet's Waymo self-driving vehicle team. The hiring of Waydo is believed to help speed up and position Apple ahead of the competition in the self-driving car efforts.

However, autonomous vehicle experts whom The Information spoke to said that Apple's self-driving car project has been neglected in recent months due to multiple shifts in focus and departure of key executives.

The iPhone maker recently expanded its fleet of autonomous cars in California a year after it gained approval to test the software. Apple's CEO Tim Cook confirmed in an interview with Bloomberg that the company is "focusing on autonomous systems" and sees it "as the mother of all AI projects". It is reportedly looking for 800,000 square feet of property for the car project.

Apple has registered three top-level domain names which are,, and as early as 2015. There were also rumors that Apple was working with BMW/Mini maker Magna to build the Apple Car. It hired former Telsa VP and Aston Martin chief engineer to work on "special projects". It is exploring methods to charge electric cars and invested US$1 billion in Chinese ride-hailing service Didi Chuxing.
