Apple poaches Samsung VP to lead operations in South Korea
Apple has hired a senior Samsung executive to lead its business in Korea.
Bloomberg spotted the change in the LinkedIn profile of Brandon Yoon, who most recently served as Corporate Vice President at Samsung for two years and 7 months. Before Samsung, Yoon was a longtime Microsoft employee who held 8 different positions in Japan, Korea, Singapore and the U.S from 2003 to 2015. Yoon joined Apple earlier this month as the country's general manager.
The iPhone maker ran into problems with South Korean regulators in the past few months. Its offices in South Korea was raided one day before the launch of the iPhone X which was believed to be part of a probe into "unfair" contracts between Apple and South Korean firms. It could also face fines in the country for pushing iPhone marketing costs to the South Korean telco partners.
Apple is fond of poaching senior executives from other companies to lead its various business units. Several high profile hires in recent years include former Google A.I chief John Giannandrea, former Burberry CEO Angela Ahrendts as SVP of Retail and Online Stores, ex-Tag Heuer's VP of Global Sales and Retail Patrick Pruniaux, former Telsa VP and Aston Martin Chief Engineer Chris Porritt to work on "special projects", former Spotify VP of Content Steve Savoca to lead label relations, ex-Amazon Fire TV chief Timonthy D. Twerdahl to lead Apple TV business, and two former presidents at Sony Pictures Television to lead video programming.
