Apple places supplier Pegatron on probation for labour violations

Apple, which is a strong advocate of workplace rights, has suspended new business with one of its key suppliers.

Bloomberg reports that Apple will not be giving new business to Pegatron after the iPhone maker discovered labour violations at a student worker's program. Apparently, Pegatron misclassified student workers and allowed some of them to work nights and overtime in violation of Apple's Supplier Code of Conduct.

Pegatron said it has fired the manager who managed the student worker program and took "quick action" to work with an external agency to strengthen its procedures. In addition, assessments of adherence to the code of conduct to metrics will be used to evalute senior management.

“Upon discovery of this non-compliant activity, we immediately took the student workers off production lines and worked with our customer and third-party experts to make appropriate arrangements for them to return to their homes or schools with proper compensation alongside all necessary support and care,” Pegatron said in a statement.

Pegatron is a key supplier of iPhones for Apple. The probation is unlikely to affect the production of the four iPhone 12 models as it only covers new business.
