Apple overtook Samsung to be world's biggest phone maker in Q4 2020

The launch of the iPhone 12 lineup helped Apple overtake Samsung as the world's biggest phone marker in Q4 2020.

Apple was the world's biggest phone maker in Q4 2020 according to research firm Gartner.

The launch of Apple's first 5G iPhone lineup is cited as the main factor for its double-digit growth. Apple is believed to have sold about 80 million new iPhones in the last quarter. Samsung saw a decline in sales (-11.8%) in the same quarter.

In terms of full year results, Samsung retained the title of the biggest phone maker. However, Garnter noted that competition was getting tougher from Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo. It is noteworthy to mention that Apple and Xiaomi were the only two phone makers in the top five to see growth.

Overall, the global sales of phones dropped 12.5% in full year and 5.4% in Q4. The sales of 5G phones and lower-to-mid-tier phones helped to cushion the decline in the final quarter. Looking ahead, Gartner believes the launch of lower-end 5G phones and innovative features will help to push for more sales.
