Production of new AirPods to begin in May and it could be Apple's biggest launch yet

The fourth-generation AirPods is expected to be available in two models.

Apple is reportedly gearing up for its biggest AirPods launch yet.

Mark Gurman of Bloomberg wrote in his latest Power On newsletter that Apple is planning to ship between 20 million to 25 million AirPods for this year, which dwarfs the orders of previous generations. Suppliers are reportedly preparing for production in May for a "record-setting run".

The fourth-generation AirPods is expected to come in two models to replace the second and third-generation models. Codenamed B768(E) and B768(M), the alphabet at the end of each model represents "entry" and "mid-tier" respectively.

Gurman says the two new AirPods models will sport new designs that fit better and USB-C charging cases. The mid-tier model will differentiate itself by having active noise cancellation and built-in speakers in the charging case for Find My capability.

On the software front, Gurman expects major AirPods-related upgrades as part of iOS 18 in September. A hearing aid mode and hearing-test feature are said to be in development for the AirPods Pro.

While the fourth-generation AirPods models are likely to debut in September or October (alongside new iPhones), the next-generation AirPods Pro could arrive as early as next year.
