Apple Music has 6.5 million paying subscribers, a third of Spotify
Nearly four months after Apple Music’s launch at the end of June, Apple CEO Tim Cook has come out with an update on adoption figures for the music streaming service. The numbers are as follow – 15 million users, of which 6.5 million are paying subscribers.
In comparison, Spotify reportedly has over 20 million paying subscribers, according to the latest figures on its website. This puts Apple Music at around one-third of Spotify’s paying customers – not quite a behemoth yet, but not insignificant either.
October is the first full month that Apple is collecting payments for the streaming service, so it’s entirely possible that the total number of paying subscribers is being boosted slightly by customers who have forgetten to cancel their subscriptions after the three-month free trial.
In August, Apple internet services SVP Eddy Cue said that Apple Music had over 11 million trial users, which would put overall user growth over the past few months at around four million.
Even though it might be a product of the most valuable company in the world, Apple Music is still in its infancy. Only time will tell if it grows to truly rival Spotify, but it certainly has the resources it needs to do so.
