Apple's mixed reality headset could have iris scanning for authentication
Apple might introduce a new authentication method on its upcoming mixed reality headset.
Sources told The Information that the Apple mixed reality headset will have iris scanning to allow users to log into their accounts and make payments. The iris scanning feature is said to be enabled by cameras that are tracking where the users are looking.
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo wrote about the "innovative biometrics" feature of the mixed reality glass in March 2021. Kuo says there will be 8 camera modules for augmented reality video experiences, 6 camera modules for the iris scanning feature, and one camera module for detecting the environment for object placement.
The Information added that the mixed reality headset looks like "a pair of ski goggles", and is made of "mesh fabrics, aluminum and glass". Users apparently can magnetically clip custom prescription lenses inside the mixed reality headset.
Apple is expected to unveil the mixed reality headset in January 2023. It is rumoured to run on the M2 chip with 16GB RAM, which should be powerful enough for gaming, media consumption and communications. The price tag of the mixed reality headset is likely to be around US$3,000.
