Apple might use iPhone X's plastic lens design for the 2018 iPhone

While there might not be a rear-facing TrueDepth Camera for the 2018 iPhone lineup, there is a possibility that the plastic lens design of the rear camera of the iPhone X could make it.

According to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is unlikely to integrate a 7P (seven-lens plastic lens array) or a 2G3P (two glass, three plastic lens) hybrid design into the rear camera module of the 2018 iPhone.

"With its rear camera specs, iPhone X has managed to strike a phenomenal balance between picture quality and form factor design, in our opinion, given how far we've come today technologically," Kuo writes. "Switching from a 6P lens to a 7P lens or a 2G3P hybrid lens, with camera module design largely similar to iPhone X's, would make for only limited improvements in aperture performance, we believe."

The transition to a new lens design poses too much a risk for Apple's supply chain, which might lead to a repeat of this year's supply issues of 3D sensor components for the TrueDepth Camera.
