Apple might develop its own OLED technology to reduce reliance on Samsung

With the entire iPhone lineup expected to use OLED panels from next year, Apple is finding ways to diversify its supply chain and reduce its reliance on Samsung.

According to ETNews, Apple has purchased CVD machines and setup a R&D facility in Taiwan to invest in OLED technology. While Apple does not want to manufacture the panels on its own, it is considering to lease the equipment to Chinese manufacturing partners such as Foxconn or Pegatron. It could also open up the supply chain to other manufacturers.

Samsung reportedly secure a two-year exclusive deal to supply OLED panels for Apple. To avoid being at the mercy of Samsung, Apple also reached out to other display suppliers such as BOE. LG is also said to be another potential supplier as it is prepared to invest billions of dollars over the next three years to build facilities and equipments for OLED production.
