Apple may use a standalone radio modem with the A17 chipset in 2023.

According to DigiTimes, sources claim that the 5G modem for the 2023 iPhone will be separate from the A-series chipset (presumably the A17 chip). This is different from Qualcomm's implementation on the Snapdragon 765/765G/888 mobile platforms where the 5G modem is built into the SoC.

Using a standalone radio modem means that power efficiency is likely to be lower, and Apple has to find space within the chassis of the iPhone to accommodate the extra piece of hardware.

Similar to Qualcomm's forecast, DigiTimes also expects Apple to use its own 5G modem chips for the iPhones from 2023. TSMC is believed to be manufacturing the custom-designed modems for Apple.
