MacBook Pros likely to transition to OLED displays too, but it won't be soon

The 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pros currently have mini-LED displays.

Ross Young, the CEO of research firm Display Supply Chain Consultants, has reiterated his belief in a display-related webinar that Apple will switch its MacBook Pros over to OLED displays.

This news comes just days after we reported on Apple's possible transition to OLED displays for its iPads.

However, Young believes that this transition is "at least three years away." He said it will take time for Apple's supply chain partners to increase their capacity to produce OLED panels at the scale and quality that Apple requires.

Therefore, he does not expect a MacBook Pro with an OLED display to launch until 2026 or 2027. This was the same timeframe that he shared earlier this year.

Young also agrees that the next-generation iPad Pros, which are expected to launch next year, will come with OLED displays – a view shared with research firm Omdia.

He also thinks the iPad Air and iPad mini will transition to OLED displays, but that won't happen until around 2026.

Clearly, Apple doesn't believe in the future of mini-LED displays. But what's most curious to me is how long it'll take for Apple to make the transition. OLED displays in notebooks are not entirely new, many PC notebooks have OLED displays these days.

I can only guess Apple's requirements are on a scale that dwarves current production or perhaps they have quality requirements that are more challenging to meet. At any rate, it looks like we'll have to wait until around 2026 to find out.
