Apple introduced the MacBook Air (2022) at WWDC 2022. Effectively, the “world’s best selling laptop” just got an update, and it packs Apple’s most powerful chipset thus far, the Apple M2.

The successor to the already powerful Apple M1 chipset series is Apple M2

It uses a second-gen 5nm manufacturing process, packing in 20 billion transistors (25% more than M1 chipset) and 100GB/s unified bandwidth (50% more than M1), with 24GB unified memory.

This translates to an 18% faster CPU, 35% more powerful GPU, and 40% faster Neural Engine when compared to Apple’s base M1 chipset.

The M2 chipset’s 8-core CPU has four high-performance and four high-efficiency CPU cores. Apple said it offers twice the performance at the same power usage level when compared to a rivalling 10-core PC laptop chip. A closer look at Apple’s fine print revealed that it was compared against a Samsung Galaxy Book2 360 (NP730QED-KA1US) with Intel Core i7-1255U and 16GB of RAM.

M2’s 10 GPU cores (two more than M1) have 35% higher peak performance than M1, while at one-fifth of the power required from competing rival chips.

Other Apple M2 chipset improvements are in its 16-core Neural Engine (15.8 trillion operations per second), Apple’s latest Secure Enclave (onboard device security for both hardware and software), a higher-bandwidth video decoder (supports 8K H.264, HEVC video, and ProRes), and a new image signal processor (ISP) for image noise reduction.

In short, this new Apple M2 chipset can be found inside Apple’s new MacBook Air.

Apple MacBook Air (2022)

The new MacBook Air (2022) goes back to the same compact, fanless laptop form factor with a 13.6-inch Liquid Retina display. It features an all-aluminium unibody enclosure for durability while staying slim and light.

Apple said that the new MacBook Air has a 20% reduction in volume with 11.3mm thickness and weighs just 2.7 pounds (approx. 1.22kg).

MagSafe charging returns, and the MacBook Air gets a dedicated MagSafe charging port. Other built-in peripherals in the MacBook Air include two Thunderbolt ports, a 3.5mm audio jack port for high-impedance headphones, the Magic Keyboard with a full-height function row with Touch ID, and a Force Touch trackpad.

The 13.6-inch Liquid Retina Display offers 500-nits brightness (25% brighter than before), thinner borders, and support for one billion colours. The notch on the front is a 1080p Facetime HD front camera with a larger image sensor that grants two times better resolution and low-light support than the previous MacBook Air.

The speakers and microphones are hidden within the keyboard and display. MacBook Air (2022) uses a three-mic array with beamforming techniques, accompanied by four speakers. In addition, Spatial Audio for music is supported, together with Dolby Atmos for movies.

If you’re not averse to shelling out extra for other accessories, the new MacBook Air is also compatible with a new 35W compact power adapter with two USB-C ports (S$85). There’s also a 67W fast charger (S$85) that grants up to 50% charge in 30 minutes.

MacBook Air (2022) comes with Apple’s macOS Monterey out of the box.

The MacBook Air starts at S$1,699 (with 8-core GPU, 256GB SSD storage, and 8GB unified memory), with the option to go up to S$3,649 for the variant with 10-core GPU, 2TB SSD storage, and 24GB unified memory. You can view all your options at Singapore’s Apple Online Store.

Four colourways are available: Midnight, Starlight, Space Grey, and Silver.

Apple M2 chipset goes to 13-inch MacBook Pro

The 13-inch Macbook Pro now gets Apple’s M2 chipset as well. Basically, it shares all the same features as the Macbook Pro launched at Apple M1’s unveiling two years ago, but it packs the newly announced M2 chipset instead of M1. Even with the new processor on board, Apple said it still offers 20 hours of video playback.

13-inch MacBook Pro (2022) comes with Apple’s macOS Monterey out of the box. It starts at S$1,879 (for a 10-core GPU, 256GB SSD storage, and 8GB unified memory model), going up to S$3,679 for 10-core GPU, 2TB SSD storage, and 24GB unified memory.
