Apple has loads more Macs based on its new M2 chip coming

The new MacBook Air.

According to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, Apple has loads more Macs up its sleeves now that it has unveiled its new M2 chip.

To recap, the M2 chip improves on M1 by using a second-generation 5nm process, having more transistors, faster memory, higher clock speeds, and more. In my review of the updated 13-inch MacBook Pro, it was substantially faster than the model it replaces – particularly in intensive multi-thread workloads.

And now that the M2 chip is out of the bag, Gurman says Apple has loads more M2-based Macs planned. Not only that, he also says that they are "likely to come in much quicker succession than the M1-based Macs did."

Here are the Macs Gurman says we can expect:

  • an M2 Mac mini
  • an M2 Pro Mac mini
  • M2 Pro and M2 Max 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros
  • the M2 Ultra and M2 Extreme Mac Pro

An updated Mac mini seems like a no-brainer seeing that it was one of the Macs to debut with M1.

Also obvious are updated versions of the 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pros. Despite their high costs, they have been a hit with professionals and power users with deep pockets. However, seeing that the last generation models were only announced late last year, I can't see Apple announcing new variants this year.

What's really interesting to me is the new Mac Pro. We all know a new Mac Pro is coming but Apple has revealed precious little about it. A new class of M2 Extreme chips seem likely because Apple did tease that the Mac Pro will be more powerful than the Mac Studio with its M1 Ultra chip.

If all these talk of M2 seems alien to you, check out my review of the new updated 13-inch MacBook Pro with Apple's new M2 chip here.

Apple's new M2 MacBook Air is also expected to go into retail sometime this month.
