Apple loses three key members of its industrial design team

Apple's small industrial design team is reportedly undergoing a significant turnover this year.

Sources familiar with the matter told The Wall Street Journal that Rico Zorkendorfer and Daniele De Iuliis have recently left Apple, while Julian Hönig plans to leave in the next few months.

Zorkendorfer shared in a statement that he is taking a break to spend more time with his family and Apple is in good hands with a new generation of designers. De Iuliis did not respond to the request for comment while Hönig declined to comment on his reported departure.

The small industrial team is gradually disbanding after the success of Apple's products such as the iPhone gave the employees comfortable lives and secure futures. Danny Coster, who collaborated closely with design chief Jony Ive on the Bondi Blue iMac, left for GoPro in 2016 after working at Apple for 23 years. Christopher Stringer, who was involved in designing several iconic products such as the first iPhone and iPad, departed in 2017 after spending 21 years with the company.

The new generation of designers, some of which came from Nike, independent studios and design schools, will be assigned more responsibility in the development of new product segments.
