Apple launches AirPods Pro 2 with better ANC, personalised Spatial Audio, and MagSafe charging

Apple AirPods Pro 2.

Apple’s new AirPods Pro 2 true wireless earbuds were unveiled at its Far Out event keynote, where it builds upon its ANC-capable predecessor.

New audio chip and drivers

Apple Silicon H2.

First among many upgrades to the AirPods Pro 2 is a new Apple Silicon H2 audio processing chip, an upgrade from the previous processor inside the first AirPods Pro. The new processor lends many of the capabilities that are new to AirPods Pro 2.

There’s also a change in sound quality, thanks to the new low-distortion driver and custom amplifier that translates digital audio data into sound.

Spatial Audio personalised to your earholes

Personalised Spatial Audio (requires TrueDepth Camera on iPhones).

Spatial Audio, the existing virtual surround sound technology you get from AirPods Pro, now have Personalised Spatial Audio in the AirPods Pro 2. The new wireless earbuds can now rely on iPhone’s TrueDepth Camera to create a personalised audio profile based on the size and shape of your head and ears. This is similar to the “Analyse Ear Shape” feature on Sony’s WF-1000XM true wireless earbuds, where Sony’s version takes your ear shape data for its 360 Reality Audio feature.

Even better active noise cancellation (ANC)

The combination of the new H2 chip and changes to its acoustic vent and microphone placement now gives AirPods Pro 2 double the noise cancelled over the original predecessor. So, Apple’s confident that the AirPods Pro 2 has improved ANC.

For passive noise reduction and better fit, Apple now provides new XS-sized eartips for people with really small earholes.

Even better Transparency Mode

Transparency Mode, which goes by many names across different audio brands, is a feature that allows environmental noise and cues into your ears, even if the earbuds originally shut that sound out with passive noise isolation. Transparency Mode lets users stay aware of their surroundings.

New to AirPods Pro 2 is Adaptive Transparency Mode, where it processes sound at 48,000 times per second. It helps to reduce highly distracting environmental noise (like construction work), while keeping ‘useful’ sounds like traffic noise, making the earbuds even more selective at keeping your commute safe.

Other features

You can now stroke, err, swipe the stems to control sound volume.

Returning are the force-sensitive controls on the stems for pausing songs and answering calls. However, AirPods Pro 2 get additional touch controls on the stems, letting users swipe vertically to adjust the sound volume.

AirPods Pro 2 also now offer longer battery life. The buds grant up to six hours on a single charge (30% more than old AirPods Pro), and  30 hours total when you include the charging case (six hours more than before).

The Find My feature for misplaced charging cases now gets Precision Finding (the same software for finding Apple AirTags). Not only does Precision Finding locates the missing charging case, the feature also leads users to its location. The bottom of the case also comes with a speaker that emits loud tones when you’re trying to locate it.

Besides relying on the Apple Lightning cable for charging, AirPods Pro 2 is also compatible with Apple Watch magnetic chargers and other MagSafe Qi Wireless compatible chargers.

The Apple AirPods Pro 2 is available at US$249 (S$359). Pre-order in Singapore begins on 19 September 2022, before hitting retail shelves and online stores on 23 September 2022 with free engraving.
