Apple could use low-power LTPO display tech on future iPhones

Apple could use low-power LTPO display tech on future iPhones

The Apple Watch Series 5 uses a LTPO display.

Apple could boost battery life on future iPhones through the use of a low-power backplane technology.

Korean publication The Elec reports that Apple plans to use low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) panels on future iPhones. Apple has to find ways to work with Samsung, which supplies the bulk of OLED panels for the iPhone. LTPO panels reportedly have an oxide TFT structure that consumes up to 15% less power than low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS), which is currently used on the iPhones.

LTPO displays are already being used on the Apple Watch Series 4 and Series 5. Coupled with a new low-power driver and a new ambient light sensor, LTPO display technology helps the Series 5 to have a display that stay always on up to 18 hours.
