Huawei is going to have a tough time retaining its throne in China in Q4 as Apple's latest iPhone 6s reportedly "broke records" in September.

According to Counterpoint Research, Apple sold 7 million units of the iPhone 6s last month which led to a leading 19% share of the smartphone sales. Apparently, Chinese consumers were attracted by the new rose gold model and that helped Apple gain the upper hand against Huawei and Xiaomi. Counterpoint Research also noted that Apple also led smartphone sales in the U.S, which means that Apple is the top phone brand in the world's two biggest phone markets.

The statistics are based on sales surveyed at mass retailers, distributors across different markets in 35 countries, cross-checks with supply chain surveys, demand-side surveys and analysts' estimates. Putting aside these sketchy data collection points, Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed during the earnings call yesterday that smartphone sales in China rose 87% in the last quarter.
