The Apple iPhone 17 and 17 Plus could finally be getting two major display upgrades

The Apple iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus do not support refresh rates up to 120Hz and always-on display.

The standard Apple iPhone 17 models could receive two significant display features next year.

TheElec reported that Apple is providing assistance to Chinese display maker BOE with the development of the low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) display panels for use in the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Plus.

What's the big deal about bringing LTPO displays to the standard iPhone 17 models? Currently, LTPO displays are used on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro models to deliver ProMotion technology with refresh rates of up to 120Hz and the Always On Display.

If Apple is indeed working to equip the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Plus with LTPO panels, there is a good chance that ProMotion and Always On Display - two features that are exclusive to the Pro models - would be available on the standard iPhone models for the first time!

Before you get too excited, BOE is also said to be struggling to meet Apple's stringent quality control standards for the panels. While this could be a setback for Apple's plans to bring BOE on board as a second LTPO supplier, TheElec said that Apple is likely to order more panels from Samsung and LG Display.

Having said that, TheElec states that Apple will continue to use the less advanced low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) panel for the iPhone 16 standard models to differentiate them from the higher-end models, at least for 2024.
