The rumoured iPhone 17 Air may not be as slim as Apple had hoped it could make it.
According to @yeux1122, industry sources claim that Apple has encountered difficulties in making the iPhone 17 Air sufficiently thin. Apparently, this is due to technical challenges in making a thinner battery within reasonable cost.
Consequently, Apple is reportedly falling back on its existing battery technology, which means that the battery alone would measure around 6mm thick. Taking into account the chassis and other components, it's unlikely the iPhone 17 Air would be any much thinner, if at all, than the iPhone 6.
The 10-year-old iPhone 6 remains the thinnest iPhone model to date at 6.9mm. However, the thinnest Apple device to date is the 13-inch Apple iPad Pro (M4) at 5.1mm.
Bloomberg reported in June this year that Apple is embarking on a mission to make its future products "the thinnest and lightest in their categories across the whole tech industry".
The recently announced Apple Watch Series 10 is another product that the company managed to shave off some thickness despite fitting it with a bigger display. The 2026 MacBook Pro is also tipped to have a "total redesign" which could see a thinner and lighter chassis.
