Apple is believed to be using Sony's new image sensor on the iPhone 15 series.

According to Nikkei Asia, the new Sony image sensor is able to double the saturation signal level in each pixel and capture more light. It will also minimise overexposure or underexposure in some settings.

Sony is able to achieve this feat by utilising a new semiconductor architecture that places photodiodes and transistors in separate substrate layers. As a result, the camera sensor is able to have more photodiodes in the dedicated layer.

Other rumoured upgrades to the iPhone 15's camera system include optical zoom of up to 5x, the use of periscople lens exclusively for the Pro Max model, and a new main camera sensor with "8P" design.
