Apple iPhone 14 and 14 Plus get the same features in different sizes

Apple iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus.

There’s no H2 2022 Apple keynote without mentioning its new iPhones, and we saw the unveiling of Apple iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus in the same breath.

Same perks, different sizes

The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus essentially share the same set of features with two key differences: display and battery size. The iPhone 14 has a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display (OLED), much like the previous iPhone 13. The iPhone 14 Plus, on the other hand, goes bigger with a 6.7-inch display. It looks like its Mini variant's lower sales gave the compact-sized versions an early departure, and Apple decided to upsize the alternate model like its Pro series. Here's how they look and feel side by side:-

Also new would be Apple iOS 16, which includes its new lock screen, iCloud Share Library, and all the other software features coming to the new operating system.

The 14 and 14 Plus also feature improved thermal performance for better heat management while maintaining “all-day battery life”, the same Ceramic Shield protection on the front, and aerospace-grade aluminium for its IP68-rated body.

Apple Silicon A15 Bionic 5-core GPU

Both models also now get the Apple Silicon A15 Bionic with 5-core GPU, a souped-up version of the A15 Bionic that first appeared in iPhone 13 Pro. According to Apple, the GPU is 18% faster than the iPhone 12 series, with a 6-core CPU (two high-performance and four efficiency cores), a 16-core Neural Engine for machine learning, and a custom Image Signal Processor (ISP) for camera capabilities.

49% improvement in low-light capture for 12MP main camera

Both models pack in a 12MP main camera like before. However, it now has a larger sensor, 1.9μm pixel size, f/1.5 aperture, and sensor-shift OIS. All these tweaks grant 49% better low-light capture, which helps retain colour vibrancy even in challenging shooting environments.

The phones also get a new 12MP TrueDepth front camera with f/1.9 aperture. It is also the first Apple phone to have autofocus on the front camera. Apple said it has 38% improved low-light performance and faster focus, making it easier and faster to take selfies in more places.

Illustration of Photonic Engine.

Additional software adjustments to Deep Fusion see its image processing applied earlier than usual to capture as much image data as possible. This upgraded software is called Photonic Engine. When compared to the iPhone 13, the new software offers 2x better low-light capture on the front and ultra-wide camera, and 2.5x improvement for low-light capture on the main camera.

Action Mode is an overscanning software for videographers who enjoy shooting with movement. Essentially, it’s a new stabilisation feature that uses the full sensor that captures footage similar to gimbal-stabilised videos.

Other features

Crash Detection on iPhone 14 series.

The Crash Detection from Apple Watch Series 8 is also available on the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus. Making this possible is a new High Dynamic Range gyroscope that detects up to 256G of force. Crash Detection alerts show up on the phone, and work in tandem with the new Apple Watch wearables.

All U.S. models of iPhone 14 and 14 Plus no longer have SIM card tray holders. Apple attributes that missing feature to the widespread adoption of eSIM (digital SIM card), allowing its U.S. users to get transferable mobile and multiple SIM plans easily.

Emergency SOS via Satellite.

There’s also a new emergency service called Emergency SOS via Satellite. This “oh no” functionality provides emergency services via satellite connectivity, allowing for off-grid access where typical cellular towers and base stations cannot reach.

Apple iPhone 14 series antennas can now connect to satellite frequencies. The phone tells you which part of the sky you can point your phone to receive a satellite signal for emergency help. It takes less than 15 seconds to send a text message (with a clear view of the sky), and a couple of minutes in foliaged (wooded) areas. The Find My app also now works with a satellite connection.

Emergency SOS via Satellite is a paid feature launching in the U.S. and Canada from November 2022 onwards, with two free years provided on every iPhone 14.

Also, all Apple iPhone 14 series users can access Apple Fitness+ even without an Apple Watch.
