Apple just announced that it is awarding $10 million from its Advanced Manufacturing Fund to Copan Diagnostics, a manufacturer of Covid-19 sample collection kits.

The $10 million funding will help Copan to rapidly accelerate the supply of sample collection kits for hospitals across the U.S and increase production of the kits from several thousand today to more than one million kits per week by early July.

In addition, the funds will assist Copan's expansion to a new, larger facility with advanced equipment that Apple is helping to design. The expansion is expected to create more than 50 new jobs. Apple is also sourcing equipment and materials for Copan from companies across the U.S.

The iPhone maker has been very eager to help the worldwide response to the Covid-19 pandemic. It is shipping 1 million face shields, which it designed and tested, to medical workers every week. It also sourced more than 30 million face masks from suppliers worldwide for healthcare professionals.

Apple is redirecting 100% of eligible proceeds from (Product)Red purchases to the Global Fund's Covid-19 Response through 30 September. It is also collaborating with Google on Covid-19 contact tracing technology.
