Apple has patents for an edge-to-edge display and Touch ID under the display

The U.S Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) granted Apple several patents relating to an edge-to-edge display and Touch ID under the display, both of which are rumored to be major features coming to the iPhone 8.

Apple's patent for an edge-to-edge display describes an invention where the touch active area of a display panel is extended closer to the edge of an electronic device and reducing the overall width of the device.

The "Touch ID under the Display" patent states an invention of a fingerprint sensor embedded within the touch display and how authentication could be achieved during operation of the display. Apple specifically mentions that this patent is applicable to the iPhone, iPad and MacBook. The new MacBook Pro models already feature an integrated Touch ID sensor with the Touch Bar.

This isn't the first time that Apple has been granted patents for an embedded Touch ID sensor. One year ago, Apple was granted a third patent for optical, capacitive and ultrasonic technologies that can be used by fingerprint sensors. There are numerous reports since 2015 that Apple was planning to eliminate the physical Touch ID button for good.
