Apple Fitness+ gets SharePlay compatibility, Guided Meditation, and Pilates

When Apple revealed more details about the enhanced Apple Fitness+ subscription at today’s Apple keynote (15 September 2021), we swore we heard a disappointed, heart-rending wail from Singaporean fitness influencers, all dressed up in their yoga-tight athleisure outfits while seated atop their exercise balls.

Why? Because Apple is bringing Apple Fitness+ to even more countries - 15 to be exact, including Indonesia and Malaysia - and none of them is Singapore.

That said, Apple Fitness+ now comes with even more workouts, programmes, and features, warming up the service for its eventual Singapore release (hopefully).

Guided Meditation, Pilates, and Workouts for the Snow Season

New to Apple Fitness+ are additional fitness and well-being programmes, specifically Guided Meditation, Pilates, and Workouts for the Snow Season.

Guided Meditation help users develop a regular meditation routine with nine guided themes: Purpose, Kindness, Gratitude, Awareness, Creativity, Wisdom, Calm, Focus, and Resilience. Each practice comes with Fitness+ trainers and can be five, 10, or 20 minutes long. Apple offers both a video version of each meditation session on top of audio-only sessions through the Mindfulness app. The audio-only Guided Meditation can be played off Apple Watches paired to AirPods or other Bluetooth headphones.

Pilates now join Fitness+ as a low-impact workout type, focusing on maintaining and improving strength and flexibility. The workouts offered require only an exercise mat, with some workouts requiring a resistance band. All Pilates workouts are 10, 20, or 30 minutes long.

Workouts to Get Ready for Snow Season is a mouthful. But in essence, these new Fitness+ workouts are intended to help winter warriors prepare better for winter sports. These snow-releated workouts focus on building up strength, improving balance, and increasing endurance.

Like all Fitness+ programmes in the subscription, these workouts are guided by trainers and can be adjusted to suit your preferred fitness level.

More workout songs in Artist Spotlight

An important part of working out is the exercise songs to go with them. Artist Spotlight now comes to new workouts (Cycling, Rowing, HIIT, Strength, Yoga, Dance, and Treadmill), across six music genres (Latest Hits, Chill Vibes, Everything Rock, Pure Dance, Upbeat Anthems, and Hip-Hop/R&B).

In addition, Artist Spotlight adds entire workout playlists dedicated to specific musicians, including Billie Eilish, Calvin Harris, Imagine Dragons, and Nicki Minaj.

Group Workouts with SharePlay

Fitness+ can now offer workouts with friends, remotely. Group Workouts with SharePlay supports up to 32 people at once, and Fitness+ users can start a Group Workout through a group message thread or FaceTime call (Phone, iPad, and Apple TV with AirPlay).

Doing so would make the user choose a workout or Meditation before Apple puts up their friends on-screen to get started.  During a Group Workout, users can see their progress on the Burn Bar or Activity Rings, which are displayed for all to see.
