Apple files patent for its logo on the iPhone to double as a notification light

The Apple logo on the back of the iPhone could double as a notification light.

Aside from branding purposes and its rumored function to be a reverse wireless charging spot, the Apple logo on the back of the iPhone could serve another function - notification light.

The iPhone maker has filed a patent application with the U.S Patent & Trademark Office which describes an "adjustable decoration" that could react to signals like "incoming communication". The "decoration" is said to consist of a transparent layer along with an adjustable optical component that can change how a light appears through that layer. Light can have a tint, haze, mirror or other effects that the user tweaks through the Settings app on the iPhone.

As the patent specifically refers to a "cellular telephone", it suggests that Apple is looking to implement this feature on an upcoming iPhone. However, images in the patent application also show a laptop and an iMac. This feature was found on MacBooks a few years ago where the Apple logo lit up whenever the lid was opened.
