Apple expected to debut a new 3D sensor system on the next iPad Pro

Apple's next iPad Pro may come with a killer feature - a new 3D sensor system.

People familiar with the matter told Bloomberg that Apple plans to release a new iPad Pro as early as the first half of 2020. The new iPad Pro model is expected to have two rear camera sensors alongside a new 3D sensor system. This is somewhat similar to other rumours of the upcoming iPad Pro models having triple-lens setup.

The new 3D sensor system is expected to be the centerpiece of Apple's augmented reality (AR) push next year. Apple has been working on the 3D sensor system for several years and it is said to be a more advanced version of the Face ID sensor. It will allow users to create 3D reconstructions of rooms, objects and people. The 3D sensor system will be added to the 2020 iPhone models, and a combined VR and headset which is slated for release in 2021 or 2022.

The combined VR and AR headset is rumoured to ship with a new operating system, "rOS". Engineering teams for the iPhone and iPad have started work on connecting essential apps and software features for the platform. Bloomberg's claims came hours after The Information reported that Apple's AR headset with 3D scanning is likely to launch in 2022.
