Apple estimated to have shipped 12.9 million iPads in Q2

The Apple iPads continued to fly off retail shelves in Q2 according to preliminary data from IDC.

IDC estimates that Apple shipped 12.9 million iPads last quarter, which is more than the combined shipment of Samsung and Lenovo. Samsung shipped 8 million units while Lenovo shipped 4.7 million units. Compared to the same period a year ago, Apple saw a 3.5% growth in iPad shipment.

While the tablet market has been growing in the past few quarters, IDC warns that it will slow down much faster than Chromebooks and the broader PC market. Apple had a record June quarter with US$21.4 billion profit and US$81.4 billion revenue. iPad sales grew 12% with revenues of US$7.4 billion.

Apple is rumoured to be launching three OLED iPads over the next two years. This could help Apple sustain the sales momentum in the near future and its leadership in the tablet market.
