Apple estimated to have shipped 5.2 million Apple Watches in the holiday quarter

Apple had an awesome holiday quarter, setting new records for quarterly revenue as well as sales of iPhones

Its CEO Tim Cook also said that the company set "all-time revenue records" for the Apple Watch, but did not disclose exactly how many Apple Watches were sold.

According to Strategy Analytics, they believe that Apple shipped around 5.2 million watches in the holiday quarter of 2016.

How does that compare to its rivals? Considering that global shipments of smartwatches in the holiday quarter of 2016 is believed to be in the region of about 8.2 million units, that would give Apple a commanding 63% market share.

Strategy Analytics also said that Samsung was Apple's keenest competitor and was estimated to have shipped 800,000 units in the same period, giving them a market share of 10%.

However, despite the blockbuster holiday quarter, the firm believes that Apple's overall shipments for the year was actually down.

They estimated that Apple shipped 11.6 million Apple Watches in 2016, which is about 2 million less than what they shipped in 2015.
