Apple dominates smartphone industry with 86% share of the profits

Contrary to some reports, Apple's dominance in the phone industry is not waning. In fact, according to a recent report, it is estimated that Apple accounted for a simply remarkable 86% of the industry's operating profits in Q3.

This should come as no surprise considering how well its new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 are selling. These are Apple's best selling phones yet, with 10 million sold in just three days - and this figure does not even include the massive Chinese market.

According to the report, Apple's arch-rivals Samsung accounted for "just" 18% of the industry's profits - its lowest since 2011. Again, this figure corroborates with recent reports of Samsung's smartphone earnings falling an incredible 71% in Q3.

If you are wondering how come Apple and Samsung combined accounted for more than 100% of the industry's profits, it is because competitors such as Motorola and Microsoft have actually lost share. Motorola's operating loss of US$185 million and Microsoft's loss of US$341 million gave both companies a share of -2% and -4% respectively. HTC and Blackberry were reported to have broken even in Q3.
