Apple customers spent a record-breaking US$1.22 billion in the App Store over the holiday season

Sales of iPhones might be down, but at least its services business is doing well.

According to Apple, its customers spent a record-breaking US$1.22 billion over the holiday season - defined as the period between Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve - in the App Store.

Spending on New Year's Day alone was also record-breaking as Apple racked in US$322 million alone on that 1st January.

Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, has this to say:

The App Store had a record-breaking holiday week and New Year's Day. The holiday week was our biggest week ever with more than $1.22 billion spent on apps and games, and New Year’s Day set a new single-day record at more than $322 million. Thanks to the inspiring work of our talented developers and the support of our incredible customers around the world, the App Store finished off an outstanding 2018 and kicked off 2019 with a bang.

App Store revenue wasn't the only new records for Apple. The company also said that new records were set for Apple Music, Cloud Services, Apple Pay, and the App Store's search ad business.

To end, Apple said that the most popular categories were gaming and self-care, with Fortnite and Player Unknown's Battlegrounds amongst the most popular games.
